Ministry of Hope Affairs

Senior Active Force SG (SAFSG) is an ongoing ground-up initiative by six individuals, also known as the Ministry of Hope Affairs. We are a group of fun-loving friends – Ethan, Glenda, Hao Jie, Hwee-Xian, Naomi and Peng Ho, from diverse backgrounds and with different day jobs. We hope to bring a difference to the lives of seniors in Singapore through empathy, research and design.

Sector Design Challenge (2019-2021)

We first came together in 2019 to participate in the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) Sector Design Challenge. With our idea Senior Active Force SG (SAFSG), we came in first place and received seed money to prototype and further develop it.

SAFSG reimagines a future where seniors are part of an ‘army’ that empowers them to stay active and contribute meaningfully to society. With the seed money, we developed a working prototype that enables seniors to browse senior-centered volunteering and contributive activities via a webapp and to sign up for them. We ran 2 rounds of pilot with 2 senior activity centres, and over the span of a month, with just 20 seniors, we clocked 177 activity signups and 214 hours of contribution.

Good Design Research (2021 - 2022)

In 2021, we applied for, and are now grateful recipients of DesignSingapore Council's Good Design Research Grant. With this grant, we took a step back to delve deeper into understanding the attitudes, mindsets and behaviours of seniors. The SAFSG Framework is the fruit of our year-long research, where we got the privilege to conduct in-depth interviews with 30 seniors and 4 community partners, detailed online survey with 300+ seniors, as well as validation workshops with 16 seniors and 4 community partners.

With the framework, we hope to inspire and spark conversations about designing meaningful experiences for seniors to age actively.
